Getting to Ireland
Ireland is an island in north-western Europe and most of our foreign guests tend to travel to Ireland by either plane to Dublin, Cork or Shannon airports, or ferry to Dublin, Cork, Rosslare or Belfast ports.
The main ferry companies are:
There are three Irish owned airlines flying into all three airports, and one to Galway airport, from Europe and the US. They all model themselves on the "low-cost" model and all take on-line bookings:
Aer Arann flies directly into Galway Airport from Dublin, as well from cities in Great Britain, including Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh, Dublin and Manchester.
There are many other airlines to choose from and your own travel agency can inform you of these.

Galway is Ireland's third largest city and is located on its west coast.
Galway can be reached from any of the entry points by driving, bus or train. There is also an airport in Galway which has regular flights to and from Dublin. All airports have car rental facilities and bookings can be made in advance:
Ireland's state-run bus and train companies operate from or near many of these entry points and information can be found on their websites:

Directions to Crookhaven B&B when in Galway
It's a 15 minute walk from the station (buses and trains operate from the same station) so if you have luggage you'll need a taxi. There should be a few waiting at all times. If not walk down the hill (50 yards) and you are in Eyre Square. At the diagonally opposite corner from where you are is the taxi rank.
If you decide to walk (ie travelling light) make for the diagonally opposite corner already mentioned. Walk downhill straight through Williamsgate St (about 100 yards long), straight on down Shop Street (500 yards long) and straight on down Quay Street (150 yards long).
Continue on straight past Jury's Inn and over the bridge. Pass a set of traffic lights, straight on past pedestrian lights, straight on past a 2nd set of traffic lights with Maher's shop on your right hand side. About 100 yards on you'll see a line of B&Bs on your right hand side. That's me, the third one, Crookhaven.
You'll find a map here (200Kb). The station is marked with a yellow circle and Crookhaven B&B with a green one.
Driving directions when entering Galway
If you choose to drive you will most likely enter Galway from either the Dublin or Limerick (Cork, Shannon) road and Crookhaven B&B can be found as follows:
- On the approach road to Galway you'll come to a roundabout that has one exit for Galway East and another for Galway West. Take the Galway East exit.
- Following all signs for City Centre you'll pass the Corrib Great Southern Hotel on your right hand side (large hotel, lots of flowers on the centre of the roundabout). Go straight through this roundabout heading for city centre all the way.
- At next roundabout you come to, you will see the city centre sign that points to the left. Take this left. About 200/300 yards down here a side road branches left for docks and Salthill. Take this road and follow it all the way (the sea on your left), eventually coming to a T junction at the docks. This is a one way street by the docks so turn left, and follow the road, left hand lane towards Salthill. You'll see Jury's Inn Hotel. Pass this hotel on your right hand side and head on over the bridge.
- Go straight through set of traffic lights, straight through set of pedestrian lights, and finally straight through one more set of traffic lights. (At this final set of lights you'll see Mahers small shop on the far side right.)
- 100 yards beyond these lights take the fork to the right and you'll see a line of B&B signs on right hand side. I'm the third house, Crookhaven. You're there!
This all sounds a long way from city centre, but believe me, I'm 7 minutes walk from Quay Street in the heart of the city where all the best pubs and restaurants are located.
IF ENTERING GALWAY from NORTHERN IRELAND via SliGO, or from MAYO or ROSCOMMON, follow signs for the city centre, and when in city centre (ie Eyre Square), follow signs for Salthill. This will also take you past Jury's Inn as in No 3 above and follow the above directions from there.
